What is calcitonin?<\/h2>\n

Calcitonin is a polypeptide hormone, meaning it is composed of a chain of amino acids. Specifically, calcitonin consists of 32 amino acids and has a molecular mass of 3418 daltons.<\/strong> This hormone is synthesized and secreted from the parafollicular C-cells, which are located in the thyroid gland.<\/p>\n

One of the main functions of calcitonin is to help regulate calcium and phosphate levels in the blood.<\/strong> When calcium levels in the blood are high, the thyroid gland secretes calcitonin. Calcitonin then acts on bone cells, known as osteoclasts, reducing their activity. This leads to decreased bone resorption, which results in lower blood calcium levels. Additionally, calcitonin has other functions. For example, it can act on the kidneys, helping to reduce the reabsorption of calcium and phosphate, resulting in increased excretion of these minerals through urine. Calcitonin also plays a role in bone protection. Research has shown that calcitonin can help reduce bone loss often seen in postmenopausal women,<\/em> which can aid in preventing osteoporosis.<\/p>\n

While calcitonin is important for regulating calcium metabolism, its role is not as dominant as that of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. These hormones are the main regulators of calcium homeostasis in the body. However, calcitonin has its specific and important role, especially in certain situations when blood calcium levels are high.<\/p>\n

Significance of calcitonin analysis<\/h2>\n

Calcitonin analysis is crucial as it helps us identify potential health issues, especially those related to the thyroid gland.<\/em> For example, elevated levels of calcitonin can indicate the presence of medullary thyroid carcinoma, a rare but serious condition.<\/p>\n

When is calcitonin analysis recommended?<\/h2>\n

Calcitonin analysis is recommended when there is suspicion of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia type II.<\/strong> This test is also used to monitor the effects of therapy for these conditions.<\/p>\n

High and low calcitonin values<\/h2>\n

Elevated calcitonin levels can be an indicator of various medical conditions. Most commonly, these levels can indicate medullary thyroid carcinoma, but also other types of cancer capable of synthesizing this hormone.<\/p>\n

Calcitonin levels are naturally high in newborns but quickly normalize.<\/em> Throughout childhood and adulthood, calcitonin concentrations remain relatively constant. Men have slightly higher concentrations of calcitonin compared to women, likely due to a larger mass of C-cells in the thyroid gland of men.<\/p>\n

In addition, there are several conditions that can lead to elevated calcitonin levels, including:<\/p>\n

  • Hyperparathyroidism<\/li>\n
  • Leukemias and myeloproliferative diseases<\/li>\n
  • Breast and prostate cancers<\/li>\n
  • Mastocytosis<\/li>\n
  • Neuroendocrine tumors, especially pancreatic cell tumors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    On the other hand, decreased calcitonin values do not have clinical significance.<\/p>\n

    Sample type<\/h2>\n
