Haptoglobin is a complex glycoprotein produced in the liver and consists of two pairs of polypeptide chains, \u03b1 and \u03b2.<\/em> These chains are connected by disulfide bonds, forming an \u03b12\u03b22 structure. The \u03b1 polypeptide can be in two forms, \u03b11 and \u03b12. By combining \u03b11 and \u03b12 chains with the \u03b2 chain, three phenotypes of haptoglobin are formed: HAP 1-1 (\u03b11\u00b2\u03b22), HAP 2-1 (\u03b11\u03b12\u03b22), and HAP 2-2 (\u03b12\u00b2\u03b22).<\/p>\n

Haptoglobin plays a key role in binding free hemoglobin in the plasma. Each haptoglobin molecule can bind two hemoglobin molecules, forming a stable complex.<\/strong> This complex, known as Hp-Hgb, is removed from the plasma by cells of the reticuloendothelial system (RES), which catabolize it into amino acids and iron. In this way, haptoglobin prevents the excretion of hemoglobin through urine and the loss of iron.<\/p>\n

  • Monitoring therapy:<\/strong> The analysis is used to monitor the effectiveness of therapy and the body’s response to treatments that affect erythrocytes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
