What is chromium?<\/h2>\n

Chromium is an essential trace element necessary in physiological concentrations for the metabolism of sugars and fats. However, exposure to chromium trioxide (known as chromic acid), sodium chromate, and potassium dichromate, often found in chromium-based paints, can lead to chromium poisoning.<\/p>\n

If these toxic substances are ingested, they can cause serious health issues such as shock, anuria (cessation of urine production), uremia (elevated levels of urea in the blood), and toxic liver damage, which can lead to severe jaundice and even death.<\/em><\/p>\n

Inhaling dust containing chromium can cause ulcers in the nose and perforation of the nasal septum. Skin exposure to chromium can quickly progress to ulcerations that often respond poorly to treatment. Additionally, chromium can exacerbate existing skin allergies or cause contact dermatitis.<\/p>\n

When is a chromium test needed?<\/h2>\n

This test is recommended when there is suspicion of low or high levels of chromium in the blood.<\/p>\n

Interpreting the results<\/h2>\n

Low chromium levels are usually due to insufficient dietary intake.<\/strong> A deficiency in chromium can affect the liver, joints, bones, and heart.<\/p>\n

High chromium levels can occur in several situations:<\/p>\n

  • Excessive intake<\/strong>, which may result from long-term use of supplements.<\/li>\n
  • Occupational or accidental exposure<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • Impaired elimination<\/strong>, such as in kidney or liver diseases, where the body cannot efficiently remove excess trace elements.<\/li>\n
