What is aldosterone?<\/h2>\n

Aldosterone is the primary mineralocorticoid hormone, a steroid produced in the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex<\/strong>. When blood pressure drops, the kidneys release renin, which stimulates the production of angiotensin. Angiotensin then signals the adrenal gland to increase aldosterone production. This system helps the body maintain stable blood pressure and electrolyte balance, which is essential for the normal functioning of all organs and systems.<\/p>\n

When is aldosterone testing done?<\/h2>\n

Aldosterone testing is typically performed when a disorder affecting the production of this hormone is suspected. For instance, if you have high blood pressure that is poorly controlled by medication,<\/strong> your doctor may recommend an aldosterone test. This test may also be conducted if you have low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalemia)<\/strong> without a clear cause.<\/p>\n

Aldosterone testing is often used to diagnose conditions such as Conn’s syndrome (hyperaldosteronism)<\/strong>, characterized by excessive aldosterone production, or Addison’s disease<\/strong>, where the adrenal gland does not produce sufficient hormones, including aldosterone. Primary hyperaldosteronism, also known as Conn’s syndrome,<\/strong> is the most common, where the adrenal glands produce excessive aldosterone. This can result in high blood pressure and low potassium levels. Other conditions leading to increased aldosterone include certain adrenal tumors, renal artery stenosis, heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and nephrotic syndrome.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Low aldosterone levels may be due to Addison’s disease<\/strong>, where the adrenal glands produce insufficient hormone, or Cushing’s syndrome<\/strong>. Certain medications like diuretics and antihypertensives can also decrease aldosterone levels. Symptoms of low aldosterone levels include low blood pressure, fatigue, weight loss, increased salt cravings, skin hyperpigmentation, and dizziness.<\/em> Consulting with a doctor about test results is crucial for determining appropriate treatment or monitoring the condition.<\/p>\n

    Preparation for the test<\/h2>\n

    For precise test results, it’s essential to stop taking blood pressure medications like spironolactone and potassium-sparing diuretics for several weeks before the test, under medical supervision. On the day of the test, patients should fast and walk for at least 30 minutes before blood sampling<\/strong>.
