Our aim is to provide accurate diagnostics to help you take the necessary steps for your health.<\/p>\n<h2>When is the Herpes simplex virus 1, 2 (HSV 1, 2) test performed?<\/h2>\n<p>The Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 (HSV 1, 2) test is usually recommended <strong>when there is a suspicion of herpes infection.<\/strong> This suspicion may arise due to symptoms such as<em> pain, itching, or a rash in the genital area, mouth, or around the lips<\/em>. Testing may also be suggested if your sexual partner has recently been diagnosed with herpes.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Herpes Simplex Virus 1, 2?<\/h2>\n<p>Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 and type 2 are two distinct strains of viruses that belong to the <strong>Herpesviridae family.<\/strong> These viruses are very common and widely spread among the global human population.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>HSV-1 is typically associated with infections of the mouth and lips<\/strong>, commonly known as cold sores or oral herpes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>HSV-2 is the most common cause of genital herpes<\/strong>, which affects the genital area, the anal region, and sometimes the skin around the genitals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Infections caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus are chronic, and the virus can remain in the body for life in a latent state,<\/em> with possible periodic reactivations that cause symptoms. Symptoms of herpes infections vary from person to person and often include <strong>rashes, blisters, burning, itching, or pain<\/strong> in the affected areas. Although the symptoms are generally mild, they can be quite uncomfortable and distressing for those infected.<\/p>\n<p>HSV-1 and HSV-2 can also cause more serious health complications in some cases. In rare situations, <em>HSV can lead to encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord).<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>How is it transmitted?<\/h2>\n<p>Herpes Simplex Virus types 1 and 2 (HSV 1, 2) are <strong>most commonly transmitted through direct contact with infected skin or mucous membranes<\/strong>, typically during oral, anal, or vaginal sexual contact, even when the infected person has no visible symptoms. Transmission can also occur through kissing, particularly in cases of oral herpes (HSV-1). Less commonly, the viruses can be transmitted via contaminated objects, such as towels or utensils.
