A urethral swab is a bacteriological and mycological test used to detect pathogenic bacteria and fungi present in a patient’s sample.<\/em> This analysis is relevant for both men and women, and you can perform it at the IntroLab<\/a>, private laboratory in Belgrade.<\/p>\n

Why is a urethral swab performed?<\/h2>\n

The analysis is conducted to identify the causes of urethral infections, particularly sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, as well as fungal infections.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What are the indications for taking a urethral swab?<\/h2>\n

The most common indications for this analysis include symptoms such as:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Sharp pain<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Discomfort in the urethra<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Increased discharge<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Burning sensation during urination<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Redness in the genital area<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Swelling of the genital area<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    How is a urethral swab taken?<\/h2>\n

    Before taking the sample, the patient may be advised not to urinate for at least 2 hours prior to the test<\/em> to ensure that bacteria are not flushed out from the urethra.<\/p>\n

    During the procedure, medical staff will use an antiseptic wipe to gently clean the external opening of the urethra.<\/p>\n

    The method of taking the sample varies depending on whether the patient is male or female.<\/p>\n

      \n
    • For men:<\/strong> Medical staff gently insert a sterile swab into the urethral opening at the tip of the penis. The swab is then rotated several times to collect cells and secretions, and then carefully removed.<\/li>\n
    • For women:<\/strong> Medical staff insert a sterile swab into the urethral opening located above the vaginal opening and below the clitoris. As with men, the swab is rotated to collect cells and secretions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      It’s important to note that taking a urethral swab may be uncomfortable, but it is usually not painful. If you experience severe pain or discomfort during or after the test, be sure to inform the person performing the test or your doctor.<\/p>\n

      What happens after the analysis?<\/h2>\n

      After the analysis, the results will be sent to your doctor, who will interpret them and recommend appropriate treatment or further testing if necessary.<\/p>\n

      Interpreting the results<\/h2>\n

      Results are based on the structure, morphology, and color of the bacteria and fungi during Gram staining. Normal results include negative findings for fungi, trichomoniasis, Gram-positive cocci, and Gram-negative bacilli.<\/em><\/p>\n

      Disease prevention<\/h2>\n
