This test detects the presence of IgM antibodies specific to the bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae in the patient&#8217;s blood. Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common cause of atypical pneumonia, also known as &#8220;walking pneumonia.&#8221; This analysis is particularly useful for the early detection of infection by this bacterium and is available at <a href=\"https:\/\/staging-introlab.dev-digitaldot.com\/en\/\">IntroLab<\/a>, one of the most reliable laboratories in Belgrade.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Why is this analysis important?<\/h2>\n<p>When a person shows symptoms similar to those of atypical pneumonia, a doctor may recommend this analysis to confirm or rule out an infection by Mycoplasma pneumoniae. <em>IgM antibodies are the &#8220;first line of defense&#8221; of our immune system and typically appear before IgG antibodies,<\/em> meaning they are present in the early stage of infection.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the symptoms of atypical pneumonia?<\/h2>\n<p>Atypical pneumonia, often referred to as &#8220;walking pneumonia,&#8221; is caused by various microorganisms, including Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The symptoms of atypical pneumonia can be milder compared to typical pneumonia and develop gradually. Here are some of the most common:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mild cough,<\/strong> often dry but can become productive<\/li>\n<li><strong>Feeling of fatigue or weakness<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sore throat<\/strong> that may be accompanied by mild difficulty swallowing<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mild to moderate headache<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Elevated body temperature<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Muscle pain<\/strong> that may be accompanied by joint pain<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wheezing in the chest or difficulty breathing<\/strong>, especially with deep breaths or coughing<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chest pain<\/strong> that may worsen with coughing or deep breathing<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rash<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Chills<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to prepare for the analysis?<\/h2>\n<p>This analysis requires <strong>a blood sample taken from a vein.<\/strong> There are no special preparations for drawing blood, but it is always good to inform the doctor about all medications and supplements the patient is taking.<\/p>\n<h2>Interpretation of results<\/h2>\n<p><strong>A positive result for Mycoplasma Pneumoniae IgM Ab indicates that the person has recently been exposed to the bacterium and that their immune system has begun to produce antibodies<\/strong> in response to the infection. However, a positive result can also occur in individuals who have been previously infected with this bacterium. A negative result may mean that the person has not been exposed to the bacterium or that the infection is so recent that the body has not yet started to produce detectable antibodies.<\/p>\n<p>From a study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/journals\/372\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clinical and Vaccine Immunology<\/a>, it was shown that IgM antibodies are usually detected before IgA antibodies. The study found that positive rates for Mycoplasma pneumoniae IgM and IgA on the first day of hospital admission were 63.8% and 33.8%, respectively.
