More about vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 consists of three natural forms: pyridoxol, pyridoxamine, and pyridoxal, as well as their 5-phosphate derivatives. The biologically active form is pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP), which plays a significant role as a cofactor in enzymatic reactions in the body.

Vitamin B6 analysis: Symptoms of deficiency and excess

A deficiency in vitamin B6 can potentially cause burning mouth syndrome, and contribute to carpal and tarsal tunnel syndromes, making B6 blood analysis of great importance. Individuals with chronic and progressive nerve compressions may have a vitamin B6 deficiency and should be further examined.

Symptoms of this vitamin deficiency can include skin peeling, gingivitis, irritability, weakness, depression, dizziness, peripheral neuropathy, and seizures. In children, a vitamin B6 deficiency may manifest as diarrhea, anemia, and seizures. To investigate these conditions, a comprehensive analysis of the B-group vitamins is indicated.

An extremely high level of PLP combined with a low level of pyridoxine acid (PA) can be observed in hypophosphatasia, a condition characterized by low alkaline phosphatase activity and various skeletal abnormalities.
