IntroLab Laboratory in Belgrade offers vitamin B12 test as part of its diagnostic services. This test is crucial as it provides insight into the levels of vitamin B12 in the body, which is essential for the normal functioning of the nervous system, DNA synthesis, and red blood cell production. A deficiency can lead to various health problems, including anemia, neurological disorders, and growth issues in children.
About Vitamin B12
Also known as cyanocobalamin, this water-soluble vitamin must be obtained through diet, primarily from animal products. Although some bacteria in the large intestine can synthesize it, absorption from this source is not efficient. The daily requirement is about 2 micrograms. Deficiency, which can be identified by this blood test, is most commonly associated with stomach disorders, as absorption requires intrinsic factor, a protein synthesized by the stomach.
When is Vitamin B12 Test Recommended?
This test is important for diagnosing macrocytic, or pernicious, anemia in individuals showing symptoms, alongside other diagnostic tests and clinical data. Additionally, measuring vitamin B12 levels is useful for evaluating conditions like dementia and neuropathies.
What Do Low and High Vitamin B12 Levels Indicate?
Low vitamin B12 concentrations, along with the patient’s clinical symptoms, may indicate macrocytic or pernicious anemia. Reduced levels can also suggest certain neurological disorders.
On the other hand, elevated levels can result from excessive intake through supplements. High levels may also indicate myeloproliferative diseases (bone marrow disorders), as well as certain liver and kidney diseases, or malignancies.
