At IntroLab, we offer vitamin A testing as part of our diagnostic services. This test is vital for determining levels in the body, which are essential for eye health, the immune system, and cellular growth. A deficiency can lead to health issues such as night blindness, dry skin, and stunted growth in children.
About Vitamin A
The level of vitamin A in the blood indicates the amount of this vitamin and carotene, its precursor, that is consumed and absorbed in the intestines. In the digestive system and liver cells, carotene is converted into vitamin A.
This vitamin is essential for the retina’s function, particularly for adapting to low light. It is also vital for the growth and differentiation of epithelial tissues, bone development, reproduction, and embryonic development. Along with certain carotenoids, it enhances the immune system, reducing the impact of specific infectious diseases.
Potential Consequences of Vitamin A Imbalance
A deficiency in this vitamin can lead to degenerative changes in the eyes and skin. In some developing countries, this deficiency is a major cause of preventable blindness. Early symptoms typically include poor night vision, known as night blindness, which may progress to degenerative changes in the retina. If the condition worsens, it can cause eye dryness, leading to corneal ulcers, scars, and eventually blindness.
Conversely, excessive intake can be toxic. Overconsumption can result in accumulation in the liver, causing symptoms such as dry skin, vomiting, hair loss, bone demineralization and pain, enlarged lymph nodes, and hyperlipidemia. It is particularly important to monitor intake during pregnancy, as excessive amounts can cause various abnormalities in the baby.
