Immunoelectrophoresis of urinary proteins is a specialized laboratory method used for the detailed identification and quantification of proteins present in urine. This analysis is an important part of the diagnostic process for various conditions, including kidney diseases and immune system disorders.
IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade, with the help of its experts and through various biochemical analyses, can detect abnormal proteins in urine, which may indicate the presence of certain diseases. For example, this test can help in the detection of nephrotic syndrome, a disease that causes excessive protein excretion in the urine.
What are urine proteins?
Urine proteins are proteins that are normally found in urine but in very small amounts. Proteins are complex molecules that are essential for numerous functions in our body, including building muscles and tissues, regulating immune response, and transmitting signals within the body.
Urine normally contains very small amounts of protein. Healthy kidneys have the ability to prevent most proteins from passing from the bloodstream into the urine. However, when the kidneys are damaged or there is another medical condition, larger amounts of protein can pass through the kidneys and end up in the urine. This condition is called proteinuria.
Proteinuria can be a sign of various health problems, such as kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or urinary tract infections. Therefore, testing urine for the presence of proteins is an important part of the diagnostic process for these conditions.
Who is urinary protein immunoelectrophoresis indicated for?
Urinary protein immunoelectrophoresis is usually recommended for people who have symptoms or results of other tests that indicate possible disorders of the kidneys or immune system. This urine analysis may be indicated in the following cases:
- Proteinuria: If a previous urine test showed a high level of protein, this analysis can help identify the type of protein.
Kidney diseases: People with diabetes, hypertension, or other conditions that increase the risk of kidney damage may be referred for this analysis. - Symptoms of kidney diseases: These symptoms may include edema (swelling), especially in the legs and around the eyes. Then, there are fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, frequent nighttime urination, and others.
- Immune system diseases: This analysis can be useful in diagnosing and monitoring some immune system diseases. This especially includes multiple myeloma or some forms of lupus.
- Monitoring therapy: In some cases, urinary protein immunoelectrophoresis can be used to monitor the effectiveness of therapy for certain diseases.
It is important to note that the decision on whether this analysis is necessary is based on an individual assessment by a doctor. If you have questions or concerns about this analysis, talk to your doctor.

Sample: 24h urine
Reverse time: Up to 16 days
Preparation: No special preparation is needed before the analysis. For successful implementation, it is necessary to collect a 24-hour urine sample using a special bottle. The sample must be kept in the refrigerator throughout the entire collection period. Afterward, the sample is brought to the laboratory, where a detailed analysis is performed.
