Urea clearance is a urine test that evaluates kidney function by measuring the kidneys’ ability to excrete urea. This test is a crucial indicator of kidney health and assists doctors in identifying and monitoring kidney-related diseases. It is available at IntroLab, a reputable private laboratory in Belgrade.

What is Urea Clearance?

Urea clearance measures how effectively the kidneys filter urea from the blood. Urea is a waste product produced when the body breaks down proteins. Healthy kidneys filter urea from the blood and excrete it in the urine. If the kidneys are not functioning properly, urea levels in the blood can rise, indicating a potential kidney issue.

Why is Measuring Urea Clearance Important?

Measuring urea clearance is crucial for diagnosing and monitoring kidney diseases. Kidney diseases can reduce the kidneys’ ability to filter urea, leading to elevated urea levels. This test helps identify kidney problems and allows doctors to evaluate the effectiveness of treatments for kidney disease.

Who Should Have This Biochemical Urine Analysis?

This test is recommended for individuals with symptoms or conditions that may indicate kidney disease. Symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Changes in urine output
  • Swelling of hands and feet

It is also indicated for those with conditions that increase the risk of kidney disease, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or specific genetic disorders.

How are the Results Interpreted?

The results are evaluated considering the patient’s overall clinical picture, including other lab results and symptoms. Elevated urea levels in the blood can indicate kidney problems but may also result from conditions like dehydration, high protein intake, or certain liver diseases. Lower urea levels can be due to malnutrition, pregnancy, or specific genetic conditions.

How is the Test Performed?

The urea clearance test requires collecting a 24-hour urine sample.

Vrsta uzorka i vreme kada se uzima uzorak

Sample: 24 urine

Reverse time: 4h

Preparation: Determine if you need one or more 2-liter bottles. Discard the first morning urine (do not collect it). Collect all urine produced throughout the day and night in the bottle. Include the first morning urine of the next day. Deliver the entire collected sample to the laboratory for analysis. For certain tests, a preservative must be added to the bottle first – ask the laboratory for specific instructions.
