What is Tularemia?
Tularemia, also known as “rabbit fever,” is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis. It is often transmitted through contact with infected animals, insects, or contaminated water and soil. In humans, tularemia can cause a variety of symptoms depending on how the person comes into contact with the bacteria.
The Tularemia Antibody test is a laboratory test that looks for antibodies to Francisella tularensis in the patient’s blood. These antibodies are proteins that our body produces in response to infection with the bacterium Francisella tularensis. If these antibodies are detected, the person has been exposed to this bacterium.
When is the Tularemia Ab test performed?
The Tularemia Antibody test is usually recommended for people who have symptoms of tularemia, such as:
- High fever
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Sore throat
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Swelling and pain in the eyes
- Swelling of lymph nodes
This test may also be recommended for people at risk of tularemia exposure, either through their job (e.g., veterinarians, hunters) or outdoor activities (e.g., camping, hiking) in areas where tularemia cases have been reported.
Interpreting the results of the Tularemia Ab test
The results of the Tularemia Antibody test are typically reported as “positive” or “negative.” A positive result means that antibodies to Francisella tularensis have been detected in the blood, indicating that the person has been exposed to this bacterium. However, a positive result does not necessarily indicate an active infection, as antibodies can remain in the body for years after the infection has resolved. A negative result means no antibodies were detected, which usually indicates that the person has not been exposed to Francisella tularensis.
Test preparation
The test procedure is simple and non-invasive, involving a blood sample drawn from a vein in the arm. There are no specific preparation requirements for this test—fasting or refraining from fluids before testing is unnecessary.
Specifics and subtypes of the test
The Tularemia Ab test is specific for detecting antibodies to Francisella tularensis. However, other laboratory techniques can be used to diagnose tularemia, including bacterial culture and PCR (polymerase chain reaction) to detect the bacterium’s genetic material.
