Trichinella spiralis is a parasite that causes a disease commonly known as trichinellosis. This disease is transmitted by consuming meat from infected animals, especially pigs, which are carriers of the larvae of this parasite. The Trichinella spiralis total Ab test is a blood test belonging to a parasitological serology group. It detects total antibodies (including IgG, IgM, and other immunoglobulins) against this parasitic infection. You can perform this analysis at the private laboratory IntroLab in Belgrade. It involves drawing blood from a vein. The sample is then processed to detect specific antibodies from the blood serum.
Why is this test performed?
The Trichinella spiralis total antibodies test is recommended for individuals who have eaten potentially contaminated meat or have symptoms of the disease caused by this parasite. It can also be used to check the effectiveness of therapy or to confirm the disease.
How is Trichinella spiralis infection transmitted?
The infection is transmitted by consuming meat that contains cysts of this parasite. After the cysts are exposed to stomach acid, the larvae are released and invade the mucosa of the small intestine, where they develop into adult worms. After approximately a week, the females release larvae that travel to striated muscles, where they then become encapsulated and can remain for several years.
Symptoms of trichinellosis
Symptoms of the infection can vary from mild to severe. Flu-like symptoms may occur, such as fever, fatigue, and muscle aches. Later, as the larvae spread throughout the body, the following may occur:
- Swelling of the eyelids
- Rash
- Joint pain
If additional treatment steps are not taken over time, death may occur.
How is the infection diagnosed?
The infection can be identified through microscopic examination, muscle biopsy, or serological tests such as the test for detecting total antibodies.
Treatment and prevention
Treatment of the infection usually includes antiparasitic medications and corticosteroids to reduce inflammation. Given the potential severity of the infection, prevention is of great importance. It includes thoroughly cooking meat, avoiding consuming raw or undercooked meat, and purchasing meat only from reputable suppliers.
