When experiencing symptoms or concerns about specific diseases, it’s essential to consult with specialists and undergo the appropriate tests. One such test is the Treponema pallidum antibody test, available at the IntroLab private laboratory in Belgrade. This test is vital for diagnosing syphilis, a disease that can lead to serious complications if not detected and treated in time.
What is Treponema Pallidum?
Treponema pallidum is the bacterium responsible for causing syphilis. This disease is most commonly spread through sexual contact but can also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy or childbirth. If untreated, syphilis can cause complications in multiple organ systems and may even become fatal.
How does T. Pallidum cause infection?
Treponema pallidum causes an ulcer at the infection site, which is known as primary syphilis. In the second stage of syphilis, a maculopapular rash and swollen lymph nodes (lymphadenopathy) are prominent. Additional symptoms may include fever, fatigue, nausea, headache, joint pain, and loss of appetite. After this, the disease enters a latent phase.
Why is this bacterium known as a stealth pathogen?
Treponema pallidum is known as a stealth pathogen because of its bare outer membrane, which is primarily made up of non-immunogenic transmembrane proteins. However, it contains highly immunogenic lipoproteins within its periplasmic space, making it especially difficult for the immune system to detect.
How is testing conducted?
Serological testing is the preferred method for diagnosing syphilis. There are two types of serological tests: treponemal and nontreponemal. Traditional syphilis screening begins with a nontreponemal test, followed by a treponemal test to confirm reactive results.
Who should be tested for Treponema Pallidum antibodies?
Individuals showing signs or symptoms of syphilis should be tested. Additionally, asymptomatic individuals at high risk for syphilis are recommended to undergo screening. This group includes pregnant women, individuals with a sexual partner who has syphilis, sexually active men who have sex with men, and people living with HIV.
How are results interpreted?
The diagnosis of syphilis depends on a combination of serological tests and clinical symptoms. Positive results from nontreponemal tests should be confirmed with a treponemal test. Treponemal tests detect antibodies specific to Treponema pallidum, while nontreponemal tests detect nonspecific antibodies formed in response to cell damage caused by the infection.
Related tests
In addition to the Treponema pallidum antibody test, IntroLab Laboratory also offers the TPHA test.
