The transferrin saturation test is important for evaluating iron metabolism in the body. It is part of the iron blood panel and measures the amount of iron bound to transferrin in the blood, giving insights into iron levels in the bloodstream. This test requires a blood sample, and IntroLab in Belgrade offers accurate results and expert analysis.
What is Transferrin Saturation?
Transferrin saturation is a parameter used to assess iron metabolism in the body. It is calculated as the ratio between iron and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC). For a comprehensive evaluation of iron metabolism, it is recommended to measure transferrin saturation along with other markers such as hemoglobin, iron, and ferritin levels.
Indications for the test
Indications for determining transferrin saturation include:
- Assessing iron status in the body
- Diagnosing and monitoring anemia, especially iron-deficiency anemia
- Evaluating the effectiveness of iron supplementation in patients undergoing therapy
- Identifying the causes of abnormal iron and TIBC values
- Monitoring patients with hemochromatosis or other iron metabolism disorders
- Evaluating the risk of iron deficiency in pregnant women, children, or individuals with specific health conditions
Interpretation of Transferrin Saturation test results
Normal transferrin saturation typically ranges between 20% and 50%.
Decreased values may indicate iron deficiency or inadequate iron absorption in the body. This can be present in iron-deficiency anemia or conditions such as chronic disease, making the transferrin saturation test a part of anemia blood tests.
Increased transferrin saturation values may be associated with conditions such as hemochromatosis, thalassemia, or other genetic or hereditary diseases that lead to increased absorption or accumulation of iron in the body.
Clinical symptoms, other laboratory findings, and the patient’s medical history must be considered when interpreting transferrin saturation test results. Only qualified medical professionals can provide accurate and precise interpretation of the results.
