The TG-antibody analysis is used to diagnose and differentiate autoimmune thyroid disorders, especially Hashimoto’s syndrome. This test determines the presence of antibodies directed against thyroglobulin. The IntroLab blood draw laboratory in Belgrade provides blood analysis services for accurate evaluation of this parameter and appropriate diagnosis.

What are TG (thyroglobulin) antibodies?

Thyroglobulin (TG) is an important substance produced in the thyroid gland and plays a crucial role in the formation of thyroid hormones. In individuals with autoimmune thyroiditis, elevated levels of TG antibodies (TG autoantibodies) can be detected in the blood. High concentrations of anti-TG along with anti-TPO antibodies indicate chronic lymphocytic-infiltrative thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s disease). These antibodies are often present in 70-80% of individuals suffering from Hashimoto’s syndrome, and about 30% of individuals with Graves’ disease.

Why is the TG-antibody analysis conducted?

The Anti-TG test is important for monitoring Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and distinguishing different forms of autoimmune thyroid disorders. This analysis is used when there is a suspicion of autoimmune thyroiditis of unknown origin with negative anti-TPO test results, and for excluding TG-antibody interference in the TG test. However, a negative result does not completely rule out the presence of autoimmune disease. The antibody titer is not always correlated with disease activity and can vary over time. An elevated titer initially can become negative over a longer period or during remission, but the possibility of disease recurrence arises if antibodies reappear after remission. For a complete picture, it is advised to conduct a detailed analysis of thyroid hormones along with this test.
