A stool test for protozoa is essential for detecting single-celled parasites responsible for gastrointestinal issues. If you’re experiencing symptoms or suspect an infection, a stool test for protozoa can provide you with the necessary answers. You can schedule this test at the IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade. Our team of experts uses the latest techniques to ensure accurate and reliable results.

When is a stool test for protozoa conducted?

A stool test for protozoa is conducted when there is a suspicion of protozoal infection, which can arise from various symptoms and conditions. For example, a person may display gastrointestinal symptoms like:

  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Bloating
  • Presence of blood in the stool

Additionally, prolonged diarrhea without any other clear cause may indicate the need for testing. The risk of infection also increases if a person has recently traveled to regions where protozoal infections are common, especially if they consumed local water or food that might not have been adequately treated.

What are protozoa?

Protozoa are single-celled microorganisms belonging to the Protista kingdom. Despite being unicellular, they often have complex internal structures. Most protozoa are microscopic, although some species can be large enough to be seen with the naked eye.

Protozoa can be found in various habitats, including fresh and marine water and soil, and as parasites in different hosts. While many protozoa are harmless or even beneficial, some are pathogenic and can cause diseases in humans and other animals.

Collecting the sample

Collecting a stool sample for a protozoa test requires careful handling to ensure accurate and reliable results. The patient is given a sterile container with a lid to collect the sample. It’s important to prevent the stool from coming into contact with water or urine, so using plastic wrap or a special container placed over the toilet bowl is recommended. Once the sample is collected, the container should be tightly sealed and labeled with the date and time of collection. In some cases, multiple samples may be needed over several days since protozoa can be shed intermittently. Samples should be stored in a refrigerator if they cannot be delivered to the laboratory immediately but should not be delayed more than 24 hours before submission.

Test results

A positive result indicates the presence of protozoa, which can confirm the diagnosis of an infection. Depending on the type of protozoa detected, a healthcare provider can recommend appropriate treatment.

A negative result suggests that no protozoa were found in the tested sample. However, it is essential to consider that the infection might still be present but went undetected due to the absence of protozoa in that specific sample or low quantities below the test’s detection limit. The doctor may recommend retesting or using other diagnostic methods in such cases.
