Helminth infections represent a significant public health concern in many parts of the world. Symptoms can vary depending on the helminth type and the infestation’s location in the host’s body. A stool analysis is essential to confirm or rule out the presence of these parasites. You can schedule a stool analysis for helminths at the IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade and get fast, accurate results to start appropriate treatment if necessary.

What are helminths?

Helminths are parasitic worms that infest humans and various animals. They belong to larger parasites (compared to protozoa) and can often be seen with the naked eye. Helminths are usually divided into three main classes:

  • Nematodes (roundworms): Includes species such as pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis), hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus), and Ascaris (Ascaris lumbricoides), among others.
  • Trematodes (flukes): Includes species like Schistosoma (causes schistosomiasis) and Clonorchis sinensis (Chinese liver fluke).
  • Cestodes (tapeworms): Includes tapeworms like Taenia solium (pork tapeworm) and Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm).

Causes of infection

Helminth infections can be transmitted in several ways, including:

  • Consuming contaminated food or water
  • Contact with infected soil (e.g., walking barefoot)
  • Through insect bites

Symptoms can vary depending on the type of helminth and the location of the infestation in the host’s body. In many parts of the world, these infections are a major public health issue, requiring regular deworming campaigns, especially among children.

When to analyze stool for helminths?

Stool analysis for parasites, especially helminths, is recommended in the following cases:

  • When a person exhibits symptoms indicating a possible helminth infection.
  • When there are visible signs of helminth infection, such as worms seen in the stool.
  • If a person lives in or has recently visited an area with a high risk of helminth infections.
  • If a person has had close contact with someone diagnosed with a helminth infection.

Consult with a healthcare professional or infectious disease specialist to determine if a stool analysis is necessary for your specific situation.

What are the symptoms of infection?

Common symptoms associated with these infections include:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Redness, swelling, or pain
  • Discharge or pus
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Headache
  • Cough or difficulty breathing
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Rash or skin changes
  • Frequent urination or pain during urination
  • Chills or shivering

Sample collection

Stool sample collection for helminth analysis involves gathering a small portion of the fecal material in a sterile container, which is then sent to the laboratory. The stool mustn’t come into contact with water, so plastic wrap or a container placed over the toilet bowl is often used. For accurate results, taking at least three samples over 7-10 days is recommended, as parasites may be shed intermittently. Additional samples may be necessary if the first sample is negative but symptoms persist. Samples should be refrigerated if they can’t be delivered to the lab immediately but should be submitted within 24 hours.

Stool test results for helminths

A positive result indicates the presence of parasite eggs in the stool, while a negative result doesn’t always rule out infection, as parasites can be shed intermittently. If the result is positive, the doctor will prescribe the appropriate treatment.
