Skin swab culture (Bact/Myc) is a key method for identifying microorganisms on the skin. This test detects bacteria or fungi that may cause skin infections, making it easier to determine the appropriate treatment. If you suspect an infection or want a preventive checkup, the IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade is available with a team of experts who ensure quality and quick service. Scheduling is simple, and your well-being is our main focus.
What is a skin swab culture?
A skin swab culture is a diagnostic procedure used to identify microorganisms present on the skin. This test can detect various bacteria, fungi, or other microorganisms that may cause infections or other skin problems. The sample is taken using a sterile swab from the skin’s surface and then placed on nutrient media in a laboratory to allow the growth and identification of potential pathogens.
When is a skin swab (Bact/Myc) performed?
A skin swab (Bact/Myc) is done when a skin infection is suspected, especially if symptoms like the following are present:
- Rash
- Pustular lesions
- Cracks
The test can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment or to identify potentially resistant strains of microorganisms.
Taking a skin swab at Introlab Laboratory
Taking a sample for a skin swab at Introlab Laboratory is efficient and professionally managed. Our expert team uses a sterile swab to collect a sample from the affected skin area gently. Once collected, the sample is processed in our modern laboratory to provide accurate and fast test results.
Preparation for a skin swab
Before coming to the laboratory to provide a sample for a skin swab, there are several important steps to follow to ensure accurate results. First, the sample should not be taken if you are undergoing antibiotic therapy. The presence of antibiotics in the sample can slow down or even prevent the growth of pathogenic microorganisms, affecting the accuracy of the results.
Additionally, avoid applying topical products such as creams, lotions, or medications to the targeted skin area for at least 24 hours before the swab is taken. We also recommend washing the affected area with mild soap and water to ensure the skin is clean when the sample is collected. This reduces the possibility of sample contamination and ensures high-quality microbiological analysis.
Skin swab culture (Bact/Myc)
Once the skin swab sample is sent for analysis, laboratory technicians process it to isolate and identify any present microorganisms. In most cases, the expected result is negative, meaning no pathogenic microorganisms are present. However, if bacteria such as staphylococci, streptococci, enterococci, or intestinal bacteria are detected, this may indicate an infection or inflammatory process. In such cases, the doctor will recommend appropriate treatment. It is important to carefully follow the doctor’s instructions and begin therapy to prevent further spread of the infection.
