Symptoms of rye allergy

Symptoms of a rye allergy can vary in severity and may include:

• Skin reactions: rash, redness, itching, hives
• Respiratory issues: cough, runny nose, difficulty breathing, asthma
• Gastrointestinal symptoms: nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea
• Anaphylactic reaction: a rare but serious reaction requiring immediate medical attention

How the “Rye G12” test is conducted

A blood sample from the patient is analyzed in the lab to determine the IgE antibody levels specific to rye proteins. Elevated levels of these antibodies indicate a rye allergy.

Recommendations for people with rye allergy

People with a confirmed rye allergy are advised to avoid products containing rye and carefully check food labels. Suitable alternative grains include rice, corn, or gluten-free oats. It is also recommended to carry an epinephrine (adrenaline) injector for rapid response in case of severe reactions and to monitor symptoms to help prevent serious allergic reactions.
