Renin then initiates a series of chemical reactions that result in the production of the hormone aldosterone, a potent vasoconstrictor, which is tasked with increasing blood pressure.

Renin plays a key role in regulating blood pressure, electrolyte balance, and body fluid volume. Therefore, when renin is outside normal limits, it can signal various medical conditions, including:

• Kidney diseases
• High blood pressure
• Certain adrenal diseases

Increased production of aldosterone relative to renin can lead to a condition known as primary hyperaldosteronism, resulting in high blood pressure and low potassium levels. The diagnosis of primary hyperaldosteronism is usually made by measuring the levels of renin and aldosterone in the blood and performing confirmatory tests.
