Discover Protein C, a key component in the coagulation process. This vital protein, which you can test at IntroLab in Belgrade, plays a central role in preventing blood clots. Learn why this protein is important for your health and when you should consider getting it tested.

What is Protein C?

Protein C is an essential protein circulating in the blood that plays a crucial role in the coagulation process. This vitamin K-dependent protein is part of a complex anticoagulation system that controls the formation of blood clots. When activated, it inhibits the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, a key step in blood clot formation, thereby maintaining balance in the coagulation process.

Why is Protein C important?

The balance between coagulation and anticoagulation in the bloodstream is essential for the health and functionality of our circulatory system. Protein C plays a vital role in maintaining this balance. Reduced activity of Protein C can lead to an increased tendency to form blood clots, a condition known as thrombosis, which can result in serious complications such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Conversely, excessive activity of Protein C can lead to over-anticoagulation and an increased risk of bleeding.

When is the test performed?

The Protein C test is typically performed when there is suspicion of a coagulation disorder based on the patient’s clinical symptoms. If a person tends to form blood clots without a clear reason or experiences unexplained bleeding, this test may be recommended. Additionally, if there is a family history of thrombosis or other coagulation disorders, this test may be part of a risk assessment. This test helps doctors diagnose and manage coagulation disorders.
