Prolactin is an important hormone that plays a key role in reproductive health and breastfeeding. At Introlab Laboratory, we are committed to providing high-quality prolactin analysis to give patients a detailed insight into their hormonal status.

What is prolactin?

Prolactin is a hormone produced in the anterior part of the pituitary gland, a gland located in the brain. Its main function is to stimulate and maintain milk production in the breasts after childbirth. It also plays a role in regulating the menstrual cycle and fertility. Its levels are controlled by a complex system of signals between the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and other parts of the body. Prolactin levels typically increase during pregnancy, stimulating breast growth and preparing for breastfeeding. Additionally, prolactin affects metabolism, the immune system, and behavior. It can influence sexual function and decrease the secretion of other hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone.

When is prolactin analysis recommended?

Prolactin analysis is recommended in various situations, including fertility issues, irregular menstrual cycles, unexplained milk discharge from the breasts, or suspicion of prolactinoma – a benign tumor of the pituitary gland.

Timing of the analysis

For accurate results of prolactin analysis, blood sampling is recommended at an appropriate time interval. Our experts will provide you with guidance on the most suitable time to conduct the analysis to ensure the most precise results.

Prolactin levels

Prolactin levels can have a significant impact on fertility. High or low prolactin levels can affect the menstrual cycle and the ability to conceive. Our prolactin analysis helps identify any imbalances and provides information for further diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Elevated levels

Elevated prolactin levels, known as hyperprolactinemia, can be the result of various conditions and factors. Some possible causes include a prolactinoma – a benign tumor of the pituitary gland that produces excess prolactin, hypothyroidism – decreased thyroid gland function, polycystic ovaries, use of certain medications, as well as physical or emotional stress. Symptoms of elevated prolactin levels can include irregularities in the menstrual cycle, reduced fertility, milk discharge from the breasts outside of breastfeeding periods, headaches, and vision changes.

Lowered levels

Lowered prolactin levels are relatively rare but can be associated with damage to the pituitary gland or other hormonal disorders. Low prolactin levels can result in irregularities in the menstrual cycle, reduced fertility, and a reduced ability of the body to produce milk during breastfeeding.

Preparation for the analysis

It is recommended to spend 20 to 30 minutes in a relaxed seated position before prolactin analysis. No special preparation is needed beyond this, but it is advised to avoid blood draws immediately after eating. Health professionals often recommend performing prolactin analysis between the second and fourth day of the menstrual cycle. At Introlab Laboratory, our team will provide you with detailed guidelines and ensure comfort during the blood draw procedure for prolactin analysis.
