The potassium test is a laboratory procedure used to diagnose, differentiate, and monitor potassium levels in the blood. This test, performed on a serum sample, is part of electrolyte analysis and helps diagnose and treat conditions that cause electrolyte imbalances.
What is potassium?
Potassium is an essential electrolyte that plays a crucial role in the normal functioning of muscles, the heart, the nervous system, and maintaining fluid balance in the body. Potassium testing is recommended for cases involving acid-base changes, aldosteronism, diabetes insipidus, and adrenal hypertension. It is also indicated for Addison’s disease, dehydration, inadequate secretion of antidiuretic hormone, diabetic acidosis, and severe diarrhea.
How to prepare for the test?
No special preparation is required before visiting the laboratory for a potassium test if blood sampling is the method used.
Interpreting the results
It is important to note that about 97% of potassium is located inside the cells, while only about 3% is in the extracellular fluid. Serum potassium levels do not always reflect the actual potassium levels in the body. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the patient’s clinical picture and acid-base status when interpreting the results.
Low potassium levels, known as hypokalemia, can occur due to gastrointestinal loss of potassium, increased renal excretion, or redistribution between intracellular and extracellular potassium. On the other hand, high potassium levels, or hyperkalemia, can result from decreased renal excretion, redistribution between extracellular and intracellular potassium, or the release of potassium due to massive cellular destruction.
