At IntroLab in Belgrade, we provide comprehensive allergy testing services, including testing for Pityrosporum orbiculare. This yeast, which naturally resides on the skin, can cause allergic reactions and conditions like seborrheic dermatitis in some individuals. Our reliable testing options help identify whether this yeast is contributing to your skin issues, guiding you towards the appropriate care and treatment.

What is Pityrosporum Orbiculare?

Pityrosporum orbiculare, also known as Malassezia furfur, is a yeast found on human skin. In some people, it can lead to skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis, pityriasis versicolor, or atopic dermatitis.

How does the test work?

  • Skin Prick Test: A small amount of a solution containing Pityrosporum orbiculare extract is placed on your skin, usually the forearm. A healthcare provider will prick the skin lightly with a sterile needle to introduce the allergen. If you’re allergic, a raised bump (similar to a mosquito bite) will develop within 15-20 minutes.
  • IgE Blood Test: A blood sample is taken and tested for the presence of IgE antibodies specific to Pityrosporum orbiculare. The results usually take a few days and can give an indication of whether you have an allergy.

When should you get tested?

You might be recommended for this test if you frequently experience chronic skin issues like itching, redness, dandruff, or flaky patches, especially if treatments for these conditions haven’t been effective. People with a history of seborrheic dermatitis or pityriasis versicolor may also benefit from testing.

Preparation and results

No special preparation is required for these tests, but it is best to inform your healthcare provider if you are taking antihistamines or other medications that may affect the results. Once the test is completed, the results will guide potential treatment options, such as antifungal medications, creams, or lifestyle changes aimed at reducing yeast growth on the skin.
