The Phospholipid IgM At test is a specialized blood test designed to detect antibodies that target phospholipids, specifically phosphatidylserine. These antibodies are commonly linked to autoimmune disorders, such as antiphospholipid syndrome. Patients at IntroLab in Belgrade can take this test to better understand their immune profile.

What is Phosphatidylserine and why is it important?

Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid found in the membranes of cells, especially in endothelial cells and platelets. It plays a vital role in the blood clotting process. If the body mistakenly recognizes phosphatidylserine as a threat, it may produce antibodies against it, including IgM class antibodies, potentially leading to various health problems.

Why is the Phospholipid IgM at test performed?

The Phospholipid IgM at test is conducted for several specific reasons, including:

  • Diagnosis of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS): APS is an autoimmune disorder that can increase the risk of blood clots. This test helps identify individuals who have this syndrome.
  • Monitoring patients with autoimmune diseases: People with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and other autoimmune conditions often have elevated levels of these antibodies. Testing can assist in monitoring their therapy and predicting potential complications.
  • Assessment of the causes of recurrent miscarriages: Women who have experienced multiple miscarriages may undergo this test, as these antibodies can increase the risk of pregnancy complications.
  • Determining the cause of unexplained blood clots
  • Evaluation of unexplained neurological symptoms: In some cases, antiphospholipid antibodies may be associated with neurological symptoms such as migraines or transient ischemic attacks (TIA). Testing can aid in diagnosing these conditions.

How the test is conducted

This blood test requires a sample of blood, which is then analyzed using techniques such as ELISA to detect the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies.

Result interpretation

Results are usually reported in units per milliliter (U/mL). The normal range for Phospholipid IgM antibodies is between 0 and 25 U/mL. Values exceeding this range may suggest the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies in the patient’s blood. Individuals who test positive for both phosphatidylserine and cardiolipin antibodies are at a higher risk of developing clinical complications compared to those positive for only one of these antibodies.

Elevated antiphospholipid antibody levels are commonly found in patients with autoimmune disorders like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) but can also occur in individuals with non-autoimmune conditions or even in healthy people. It’s important to remember that these results should not be interpreted on their own when diagnosing. They should be evaluated in conjunction with other symptoms, and additional tests may be required.

Complementary tests

Although the Phospholipid IgM At test is crucial for detecting antiphospholipid antibodies, other diagnostic tools can be used alongside it. This may involve additional blood tests, such as lupus anticoagulant, Phospholipid IgG antibodies, or cardiolipin antibodies. Furthermore, imaging techniques like ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be utilized to detect blood clots or other complications related to antiphospholipid syndrome.
