The analysis of NMDAR Ab in serum is a specialized laboratory test available at IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade. This analysis detects specific antibodies – NMDAR antibodies – which can play a crucial role in diagnosing certain neurological disorders.
What are NMDAR antibodies in serum?
NMDAR Ab in serum refers to the presence of specific antibodies that target N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors in the liquid component of blood, known as serum. NMDA receptors are essential protein structures located on the surface of nerve cells (neurons) in the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord. These receptors play a crucial role in the brain’s normal functioning, enabling signaling between neurons, a process essential for memory and learning processes. When NMDAR antibodies within the serum attack these receptors, they can cause severe neurological symptoms and disorders.
NMDAR antibodies can disrupt NMDA receptors’ function by blocking ions’ passage through the neuron’s cell membrane. The neurotransmitter glutamate initiates this process. When the function of NMDA receptors is disrupted, it can lead to problems forming connections between neurons. These connections are crucial for processes such as learning and memory. Disruption of these functions can lead to various neurological symptoms and disorders.
Why is the NMDAR Ab analysis in serum performed?
This type of analysis is important for diagnosing diseases associated with these antibodies. One of them is anti-NMDAR encephalitis, a condition that can cause a range of symptoms, including:
- psychiatric changes
- motor disorders
- seizures
- consciousness disorders
How are the results interpreted?
The results are interpreted based on the presence or absence of these antibodies. A positive result indicates the presence of NMDAR antibodies in the serum, which can confirm the diagnosis of anti-NMDAR encephalitis or other related conditions. A negative result suggests that the patient’s symptoms are likely due to another disease.
