The methemoglobin test measures the level of methemoglobin in the blood. Methemoglobin is a form of hemoglobin that cannot efficiently bind and transport oxygen, leading to tissue hypoxia. This test is crucial for diagnosing methemoglobinemia and monitoring its treatment. IntroLab, a blood testing laboratory in Belgrade, offers this test.

About Methemoglobin

Methemoglobin is a special type of hemoglobin that forms when the iron in hemoglobin is oxidized, rendering it unable to effectively bind and transport oxygen. Normally, only a small portion of hemoglobin is in the form of methemoglobin. However, increased concentrations of methemoglobin can lead to hypoxia and other health problems. Elevated levels can be caused by inherited conditions or acquired factors, including exposure to certain chemicals and medications.

Indications for the Test

Indications for sampling and analyzing methemoglobin include:

  • Suspected Methemoglobinemia: A condition characterized by increased concentrations of methemoglobin in the blood.
  • Genetic Factors: Inherited mutations that can lead to elevated levels.
  • Chemical Exposure: Contact with chemicals like nitrites, nitrates, or aniline dyes that can raise methemoglobin levels.
  • Use of Certain Medications: Some drugs, such as specific anesthetics and antimicrobial agents, can result in higher levels.
  • Symptoms of Hypoxia: Symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, or cyanosis (bluish skin discoloration) may necessitate this test to diagnose the underlying cause.

Interpretation of Results

Normal methemoglobin levels are typically less than 1% of total hemoglobin. Elevated levels may indicate the presence of methemoglobinemia or other conditions that cause increased methemoglobin. If results exceed the reference values in the blood test, further diagnostic procedures may be needed to identify the cause and determine the appropriate treatment.

Preparation: It's recommended to fast for 8-12 hours before the test, meaning no food should be eaten during this period. It is important to avoid food, drinks (except water), and medications that could affect the test results. If you are taking any medications or have specific health conditions, consult your doctor or the laboratory for additional instructions.
