At IntroLab Laboratory in Belgrade, we offer testing for inhalation allergens typical of the Mediterranean region. Utilizing technology for precise IgE antibody measurement, this test is essential for effectively alleviating and managing allergy symptoms.

What are Mediterranean-type inhalation allergens?

Mediterranean-type inhalation allergens refer to allergens commonly found in the Mediterranean area. These allergens can include plants, flowers, trees, grasses, microorganisms, and animals specific to that climate zone. For example, olive trees and cypresses are common plants in the Mediterranean region and can trigger allergic reactions in some people.

Which allergens are tested?

Common allergens frequently tested in the Mediterranean-type inhalation panel include:

  • Olive
  • Cypress
  • Fig
  • Grasses such as Bermuda grass
  • Weeds like ragweed
  • Local molds and fungi
  • Dust mites
  • Animal hair and feathers (e.g., cats, dogs, birds)
  • Insects like mosquitoes and cockroaches

Why is the test performed?

The test is conducted to determine which allergens a person reacts to, allowing for an accurate diagnosis and the identification of the most effective treatment.

When is the test done?

The test is typically performed when a person exhibits symptoms indicating a potential allergic reaction. These symptoms can include:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Itchy and red eyes
  • Skin rashes
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Anaphylactic shock (in extreme cases)

It is also recommended when there are:

Chronic symptoms: Long-term or recurring symptoms affecting quality of life.
Seasonal symptoms: Symptoms that occur at specific times of the year, e.g., during the flowering season of certain plants.
Unclear symptoms: If the cause of the symptoms is difficult to determine, testing can assist in diagnosis.
Planning pregnancy or lifestyle changes: Testing may be recommended before major life changes.
Before therapy: If considering allergen immunotherapy (also known as “allergy shots”), testing is necessary to identify specific allergens.

How is the sample taken?

The blood test used to detect Mediterranean-type inhalation allergens measures the level of IgE antibodies in the blood. These antibodies are immunoglobulins that play a key role in allergic reactions.

  • Total IgE: This test measures the total IgE antibodies in the blood. Elevated levels may indicate the presence of an allergic reaction, but it is not specific to any particular allergen.
  • Specific IgE: This test measures IgE antibodies specific to certain allergens, such as olive, cypress, fig, etc. If the level of these specific IgE antibodies is elevated, it may indicate an allergic reaction to that particular allergen.
