Malaria is a serious illness that requires prompt diagnosis. At IntroLab in Belgrade, we provide accurate and efficient testing, ensuring reliable results. If you are experiencing symptoms of malaria or have been at risk of exposure, don’t wait. Scheduling a malaria test could be vital for your health.

What is Malaria?

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by parasitic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium. The disease is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected female mosquitoes from the genus Anopheles. There are five species of Plasmodium that can cause malaria in humans:

  • Plasmodium falciparum
  • Plasmodium malariae
  • Plasmodium ovale
  • Plasmodium vivax
  • Plasmodium knowlesi

Plasmodium falciparum is the most lethal species and is responsible for the majority of malaria-related deaths.

When a person is bitten by an infected mosquito, the parasites enter the bloodstream and travel to the liver, where they reproduce. They then return to the bloodstream and begin infecting red blood cells.

Symptoms can vary but often include:

  • High fever
  • Chills
  • Sweating
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Muscle pain
  • Fatigue

When is this test necessary?

Malaria testing is recommended if you are experiencing symptoms and have a history of travel to areas where malaria is prevalent. It is also advisable for individuals who live or work in such areas, as well as those who have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with malaria.

How are the results interpreted?

Malaria test results are interpreted by detecting the presence of Plasmodium parasites in the blood sample. A positive result indicates that the parasite is present, meaning the person is infected. A negative result suggests the absence of the parasite, but in some cases, the test may need to be repeated after a few days to confirm that the person is truly free from infection.

How is the test conducted?

Malaria testing is performed by examining a blood sample under a microscope. The blood sample is taken from a vein in the arm using a sterile needle.
