Magnesium is a vital mineral that plays an important role in the body. It is essential for cellular energy production and the proper function of bones, nerves, and muscles. Analyzing magnesium levels in urine helps diagnose and monitor disorders that affect electrolyte balance, which can result in abnormal levels of this mineral. IntroLab in Belgrade offers quick results for this important urine test.
When is it Necessary to Measure Magnesium in Urine?
This urine test is typically performed on individuals with symptoms of low or high magnesium levels in the blood, such as:
- Heart arrhythmias
- Weakness
- Irritability
This test can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of therapy in individuals receiving magnesium sulfate, particularly pregnant women with preeclampsia.
What Sample is Used for the Test?
The sample for test is taken from 24-hour urine collection. Results are usually available within one business day.
What is Magnesium?
Magnesium is essential for numerous vital enzymatic reactions. It plays a significant role in glycolysis, cellular respiration, and transmembrane calcium transport. Along with potassium, magnesium is one of the primary intracellular cations. About 60% of magnesium is stored in the bones, with the rest involved in intermediate metabolism. Approximately 70% of magnesium is in free form, while 30% is bound to proteins (mainly albumin), citrates, phosphates, and other complexes.
Why is Measuring Magnesium in Urine Important?
Determining magnesium levels in urine is crucial for diagnosing various conditions. Low magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia) can disrupt the balance of other electrolytes (Ca, K, P), leading to heart arrhythmias, coronary artery spasms, and potentially fatal outcomes if not promptly treated. Conversely, high magnesium levels (hypermagnesemia) can occur in acute and chronic kidney failure, excessive magnesium intake, and the release of magnesium from intracellular spaces.

Sample: 24-Hour Urine
Reverse time: 1 day
Preparation: Determine if you need one or more 2-liter bottles. Discard the first morning urine (do not collect it in the bottle). Collect all urine throughout the day and night in the bottle. Include the first morning urine of the next day. Bring the entire amount of urine to the laboratory for analysis. For some tests, you may need to add a preservative to the bottle first – check with the laboratory for specific instructions.
