Many private laboratories in Belgrade, including IntroLab, use magnesium tests to help diagnose and monitor various disorders that affect electrolyte balance in the body. A blood test for magnesium assesses the mineral’s levels, which can be either low or high, indicating certain health issues. A serum sample is used to measure magnesium levels, and further analysis can provide important information about its status.
What is magnesium?
Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in many metabolic processes in the body. It is vital for the normal functioning of muscles, the nervous system, and the heart, as well as for maintaining bone health. A biochemical analysis of magnesium helps detect potential imbalances and disorders in magnesium levels in the body.
Indication for the magnesium test
Testing magnesium levels is important for several reasons, including the presence of excessive neuromuscular excitability. It is also indicated when experiencing gastric or cardiac symptoms. Additionally, muscle cramps can prompt a test to measure magnesium concentration.
Interpreting test results
Low magnesium levels, known as hypomagnesemia, are often linked to an imbalance of other electrolytes such as calcium, potassium, and phosphorus. If not promptly addressed and treated, this condition can lead to cardiac arrhythmias, coronary artery spasms, and potentially fatal outcomes.
High magnesium levels, known as hypermagnesemia, can occur for several reasons. One common cause is acute or chronic kidney failure, where the kidneys fail to effectively eliminate excess magnesium from the body. Excessive intake of magnesium supplements or inadequate elimination can also lead to elevated levels. Additionally, the release of magnesium from intracellular spaces can contribute to hypermagnesemia.
Elevated magnesium levels can be associated with certain health conditions and disorders. For instance, in kidney failure, the impaired kidney function leads to magnesium accumulation in the body. Dehydration, severe diabetic acidosis, and Addison’s disease can also contribute to high concentrations of this mineral in the blood.
