Lithium analysis is a biochemical blood test used to assess the levels of lithium in the blood. Lithium, an alkali metal, is often used in therapy to treat bipolar disorder. This analysis plays a crucial role in monitoring lithium concentration. It helps doctors determine the effectiveness of the therapy and can assist patients in maintaining an optimal balance in the body.

IntroLab is a reliable biochemical laboratory in Vrachar. It provides lithium analysis services as part of a wide range of blood laboratory analyses.

Why is lithium analysis important?

Precise lithium analysis is extremely important for proper management of bipolar disorder. This analysis allows the medical team to monitor the patient’s blood lithium levels and adjust therapy according to individual needs. Through regular monitoring of lithium levels, potential changes or imbalances that may affect the effectiveness of the therapy or cause side effects can be identified.

When is this analysis necessary?

Regular monitoring of blood lithium levels is important during therapy with this drug. It is recommended to check lithium levels about a week after starting therapy. Since lithium has a narrow therapeutic range, regular checks of drug levels in serum or plasma are necessary to maintain optimal concentration in the body.

Interpreting the results

The normal range is considered to be from 0.5 to 1.2 mmol/L. Within this range, most people do not show symptoms of toxicity or side effects. Lower lithium values indicate an insufficient drug dose, which may result in a lack of therapeutic effect.

An increased concentration of lithium salts in the blood can cause toxicity, manifesting symptoms such as ataxia (loss of movement coordination), slurred speech, and confusion. Given that the concentration of lithium in the blood can significantly vary over time from the moment the drug is administered, it is important to control lithium levels at the same time every time during analysis. It is advisable to perform the lithium level check 8 to 12 hours after the last dose has been administered to obtain reliable results and enable monitoring of the therapeutic response.
