When discussing bacterial infections that can have serious health consequences, the Listeria monocytogenes cause one such infection, this bacterium is facultatively anaerobic and can live inside cells. It is widespread in the environment and represents a significant pathogen transmitted through food. It is particularly dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, the elderly, and pregnant women. In pregnant women, the fetal mortality rate can be as high as 45%. In people with weakened immunity, it can lead to meningitis, central nervous system infection, or severe bacteremia. At IntroLab, located in Belgrade, you can undergo a blood analysis that detects IgG antibodies to Listeria monocytogenes. The Listeria monocytogenes IgG Ab analysis is based on agglutination, the clumping of particles. It provides information on whether a person has been exposed to this bacterium and whether they have developed an immune response to it.

Why is it important to perform the Listeria monocytogenes IgG Ab test?

Detecting IgG antibodies to Listeria monocytogenes can help diagnose the infection, especially in people with symptoms indicating listeriosis but from whom the bacterium cannot be isolated from samples. Additionally, this analysis can be useful in epidemiological research to determine the spread of infection in a specific population.

What is listeriosis?

Listeriosis is a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium named Listeria monocytogenes. This bacterium can be found in soil, water, and some animals, including livestock and birds. It can also be present in raw milk, products made from raw milk, and in raw meat and vegetables.

Transmission and exposure

People usually become infected by consuming contaminated food. For example, unpasteurized dairy products, raw meat, and unprepared vegetables are common sources of infection. Additionally, listeriosis can be transmitted from mother to fetus during pregnancy or to the newborn during childbirth.

Risk of infection with Listeria monocytogenes

While anyone can contract listeriosis, some groups are particularly vulnerable. These include pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. In these sensitive groups, listeriosis can lead to serious complications or even death. Listeriosis is particularly dangerous because of its ability to cross the intestinal wall, enter the bloodstream, and reach the brain, causing meningitis. It can also cause infections in other body parts, such as bones or joints.

Symptoms of listeriosis

Symptoms of listeriosis can vary depending on the person and the part of the body affected. Here are some typical symptoms that may occur:

  • Flu-like symptoms: Include fever, chills, muscle pain, fatigue, and nausea. These symptoms are often mild and may appear several days after consuming contaminated food.
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
  • Symptoms in newborns: Babies can be born with listeriosis if the mother is infected during pregnancy. Symptoms in newborns can include poor appetite, lethargy, fever, vomiting, difficulty breathing, and a rash or nodules on the skin.
  • Symptoms in people with weakened immune systems: In people with weakened immunity, listeriosis can cause more serious complications, such as meningitis (inflammation of the brain membranes) or encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). Symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, and impaired coordination.
  • Symptoms in pregnant women: Although pregnant women usually have mild flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature birth, miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe infection in the newborn.

If you suspect that you have consumed food that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and have any of the listed symptoms, immediately contact your doctor. Listeriosis can be effectively treated with antibiotics if diagnosed in time.

Prevention

To reduce the risk of listeriosis, avoiding consuming raw dairy products, properly washing vegetables before consumption, thermally processing meat at the appropriate temperature, and adhering to basic hygiene measures when preparing food is recommended.

How are the results of the analysis interpreted?

IgG antibodies to Listeria monocytogenes indicate that the person has been exposed to this bacterium in the past. However, it is important to note that the presence of antibodies does not necessarily mean that the person currently has an active infection. It is always advisable to consult with a doctor who will consider all clinical symptoms and other laboratory findings to make an accurate diagnosis.

Tests similar to Listeria monocytogenes IgG Ab

In addition to the Listeria monocytogenes IgG Ab analysis, other analyses belonging to the group of bacteriological serology, such as Listeria monocytogenes IgM Ab, can also be performed at IntroLab.
