At IntroLab in Belgrade, we offer Influenza B virus testing (nasopharyngeal swab, lavage) to provide fast and accurate information about your flu-related health status. Early detection through our test is essential for proper treatment and preventing the virus from spreading further.
What is the Influenza B virus?
The Influenza B virus is one of the three types of flu viruses, alongside Influenza A and C, that primarily circulates among humans and can cause seasonal flu epidemics. Unlike Influenza A, the Influenza B virus does not circulate among animals, and its genetic variability is limited, meaning it doesn’t mutate as rapidly and has fewer subtypes. While the risk of a pandemic is lower compared to Influenza A, Influenza B can still cause significant seasonal outbreaks, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms of the Influenza B virus include:
- High fever
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle aches
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
How is it transmitted?
The virus spreads through respiratory droplets, primarily when infected individuals sneeze or cough. Small droplets can enter the mouth, nose, or eyes of others. The virus can also spread by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes. Practicing good hygiene, such as regular hand washing and avoiding touching your face, is essential to reduce the risk of infection.
When is Influenza B virus testing (nasopharyngeal swab, lavage) recommended?
Testing is recommended for individuals showing flu-like symptoms, particularly during seasonal outbreaks or when flu activity is known to be present in the community. The test may also be suggested for people who have been in contact with infected individuals. Additionally, it is recommended for those in high-risk groups, such as the elderly, young children, or individuals with weakened immune systems.
Timely testing and identification of the virus help facilitate proper treatment and prevent further spread within the community. In some cases, testing may also be recommended as part of broader epidemiological studies or monitoring during outbreaks.
