The HHV 8 (urethral, vaginal, cervical swab; urine, blood, saliva) analysis is a diagnostic procedure that aids in the detection of Human Herpes Virus 8 in various parts of the body. This analysis can be performed at the IntroLab in Belgrade, where experienced and professional staff utilize the latest technological resources to provide precise and reliable diagnostics.

What is Human Herpes Virus 8?

Human Herpes Virus 8 is a type of herpes virus that causes Kaposi’s sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. This cancer leads to lesions on the skin and can affect other organs. HHV-8 is one of nine known human herpes viruses. Like other herpes viruses, this virus can remain in the body of an infected individual for life, often existing in a latent (inactive) state. However, under certain circumstances, the virus can become active and cause disease.

When is the HHV 8 analysis performed?

The HHV 8 analysis is conducted when there is a suspicion of infection with this virus or when it is necessary to monitor the progression of diseases associated with HHV 8.

  • Symptoms of Kaposi’s Sarcoma
  • HIV-positive patients
  • Immunocompromised individuals
  • History of multicentric Castleman’s disease or primary effusion lymphoma

How is Human Herpes virus 8 transmitted?

Infection with the virus is primarily transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids, such as blood or genital secretions. Transmission can occur through sexual contact, sharing needles or injection instruments with an infected person, or through organ transplantation or blood transfusion from an infected donor. There is also a possibility of vertical transmission, meaning the virus can be passed from mother to child during childbirth.
