Hemoglobin electrophoresis is crucial for detecting and monitoring conditions related to abnormalities in this blood protein. We provide this service at our IntroLab in Belgrade, offering affordable pricing for protein electrophoresis.
About the test
Hemoglobin electrophoresis is a laboratory test used to separate and identify various types of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.
Different hemoglobin types have distinct structures and electrical properties. Electrophoresis uses an electric field to move hemoglobin through a gel or liquid medium. Each type of hemoglobin moves at a different speed, allowing for their separation.
This test is essential for diagnosing various hemoglobinopathies, which are genetic disorders that affect the structure or production of hemoglobin. Conditions diagnosed with this test include sickle cell anemia and thalassemia.
Who should undergo hemoglobin electrophoresis?
Hemoglobin electrophoresis is advised for individuals at risk of inherited hemoglobin disorders and those exhibiting symptoms that might suggest these conditions, such as anemia, fatigue, weakness, or shortness of breath. The test is particularly recommended for:
- Individuals with a Family History of Hemoglobinopathies: If disorders like sickle cell anemia or thalassemia run in the family, this test can determine if a person has or carries the disorder.
- Couples Planning to Have Children: If both partners have a family history of hemoglobinopathies, testing can assess the risk of their child inheriting the disorder.
- Individuals with Unexplained Anemia: For those with anemia symptoms not explained by routine tests, hemoglobin electrophoresis can identify potential hemoglobin disorders.
- Newborns and Children: In some countries, such as the United States, newborns are routinely screened for hemoglobin disorders. Additional testing may be needed if a child shows symptoms like anemia or growth delay.
