Diagnosis of liver infections, particularly those caused by hepatitis viruses, requires precision, speed, and reliability. The HDV total Ab analysis is one of the key tests for detecting the presence of the hepatitis D virus in the body. For the most reliable results and expert guidance throughout the process, scheduling the analysis at IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade is the optimal choice for all patients.

What is HDV total Ab?

HDV total Ab refers to the total antibodies for the hepatitis D virus (HDV). Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system in response to an infection. The presence of these antibodies in the blood can indicate a current or previous HDV infection. Testing is often used for diagnostic purposes, to determine whether a person has been exposed to hepatitis D.

What is hepatitis D?

Hepatitis D is an infectious disease caused by the hepatitis D virus. It is a unique form of hepatitis because it can only develop in people who are already infected with hepatitis B. HDV is actually a satellite virus that uses HBV for replication. The infection can be simultaneous (co-infection with HBV) or a superinfection (subsequent infection of a person already infected with HBV). Hepatitis D can lead to serious liver damage, including cirrhosis and liver failure.

Difference between acute and chronic infections

An acute infection is a short-term health problem that develops quickly and usually lasts a short time. Acute infections often cause pronounced symptoms and a rapid immune response. On the other hand, a chronic infection lasts longer, often months or even years. Symptoms of chronic infection may be milder or even absent, but the infection can cause gradual damage to tissues or organs.

Subtypes of HDV total Ab analysis

In addition to the HDV total Ab analysis, there are two other important tests that can detect hepatitis D.

The combination of these tests allows us to provide a comprehensive diagnosis and a precise understanding of the infection status in patients. By utilizing all available tools, doctors can provide the best possible care and treatment for individuals with hepatitis D.
