At IntroLab we offer hantavirus antibody test which helps detect infections caused by this virus.

What is Hantavirus?

Hantavirus is a zoonotic virus transmitted from rodents to humans through contact with infected urine, saliva, or feces, primarily from mice and rats. There are several types of hantaviruses, each causing different illnesses in humans. The two main diseases associated with hantavirus are:

  • Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS): This illness primarily occurs in North and South America. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea, coughing, and breathing difficulties. HPS can be severe, often leading to respiratory complications such as Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS).
  • Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS): This form is more common in Europe and Asia. Initial symptoms are flu-like but can progress to kidney damage, bleeding, and low blood pressure. The severity of the disease varies depending on the hantavirus strain and the patient’s immune response.

Transmission and prevention

Hantavirus is not typically transmitted between humans, except in rare cases with certain virus types. The infection is usually contracted by inhaling aerosolized particles from infected rodent excreta or through direct contact with them. People who spend time in areas inhabited by infected rodents, such as rural regions, farms, or campsites, are at higher risk of exposure.

When is Hantavirus testing recommended?

Hantavirus antibody testing is recommended for patients experiencing symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, and breathing difficulties, or when exposure to infected rodents is suspected. Elevated antibody levels indicate the presence of a hantavirus infection.

How is the test conducted?

The hantavirus antibody test involves taking a blood sample and analyzing it in the laboratory for specific antibodies. The test helps doctors identify an acute or past infection and plan the appropriate treatment.

Importance of testing

Timely diagnosis of hantavirus infection can significantly improve treatment outcomes, particularly for patients with severe respiratory symptoms or kidney damage.
