The Grapes F50 test is a food allergen test. Offered by IntroLab in Belgrade it provides accurate information on the presence of antibodies that react to proteins in grapes.
Why is the Grapes F50 test important?
Grapes are one of the oldest cultivated fruits and are widely used in human diets, both fresh and in products like juice or wine.
Symptoms of a grape allergy
A grape allergy can cause a range of symptoms, including:
- Generalized hives
- Asthma
- Dermatitis
- Angioedema
- Gastrointestinal symptoms
- Anaphylaxis
Gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating and gas after consuming grapes are often attributed to the presence of fructose in the fruit.
How is the Grapes F50 test performed?
The test is conducted by drawing blood, typically done in a laboratory such as IntroLab. The blood sample is then analyzed to detect specific antibodies that react to grape proteins.
What does the test show?
The test can identify the presence of various antibodies, including lipid transfer protein, the main allergen that sensitizes 70% to 100% of people allergic to grapes. The test can also reveal potential cross-reactivity with other fruits and foods.
Possible cross-reactions
Lipid transfer protein can cause cross-reactivity with other foods containing this protein, such as peaches. Grapes also contain thaumatin, a protein similar to the allergen found in cherries, meaning people allergic to one of these fruits may also be allergic to the other.
How is the diagnosis made?
Diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms, medical history, and test results. In some cases, additional food allergy testing may be required.
Treatment
The treatment includes removing grapes from your diet. Antihistamines can also be used to alleviate symptoms.
Additional notes on grape allergy
It’s important to note that individuals who test positive for a grape allergy with the Grapes F50 test may also be allergic to wine. Furthermore, wine can contain other components like sulfites and histamine, which may cause allergic reactions.
