Urine analysis
The glucose test in urine is an important urine analysis used to assess the level of glucose present in the urine. Glucose is a sugar that serves as the primary energy source for the body. Normally, it is filtered through the kidneys, but most of it is reabsorbed back into the bloodstream, so its level in urine is usually very low or absent. However, the presence of glucose in urine can indicate various health conditions or metabolic disorders. For this reason, it is important to perform this test promptly, and the biochemical laboratory in Belgrade, IntroLab, can provide this service for you.
What are the Indications for Measuring Glucose in Urine?
The most common indications for this test are:
- Diagnosis of Diabetes: If diabetes is suspected, especially with symptoms such as frequent thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, or blurred vision, this urine test can help identify elevated glucose levels that indicate possible diabetes.
- Diabetes Management: Individuals who already have diabetes and are undergoing therapy to control blood sugar levels can undergo this test to monitor the effectiveness of their therapy and blood sugar control.
- Assessment of Metabolic State: This test can be useful in assessing a patient’s metabolic state, especially when there is suspicion of certain metabolic disorders. This can include kidney disorders, endocrine diseases, or conditions that may affect glucose metabolism in the body.
- Early Detection of Diabetes Complications: Elevated glucose levels in urine can indicate the presence of diabetes complications. One of the most common is nephropathy (kidney disease), which can be an early indicator of kidney damage.
When is Glucose Present in Urine?
The presence of glucose in urine, known as glucosuria, can indicate various health problems and metabolic disorders. Here are some possible causes and the significance of glucose presence in urine:
- The most common cause of glucosuria is inadequate regulation of blood sugar levels. This is characteristic of diabetes. When blood glucose levels exceed the renal threshold, the kidneys cannot fully reabsorb all the glucose, so it is excreted in the urine. Therefore, the presence of this sugar in urine can indicate uncontrolled type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
- Besides diabetes, glucosuria can be present in temporary conditions. For example, it can occur due to emotional or physical stress, pregnancy, the use of certain medications, or hormonal imbalances. This temporary glucosuria usually disappears when the underlying factor is resolved.
- The kidneys play a crucial role in reabsorbing glucose from primary urine back into the bloodstream. Disorders in kidney function, such as kidney diseases or damage, can reduce their ability to reabsorb glucose, resulting in its presence in the urine.
- In addition to diabetes, the presence of glucose in urine can be associated with other metabolic disorders such as thyroid hormone disorders (hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism) or liver diseases.

Preparation: The ideal urine sample for analysis is fresh, first morning urine (first stream) collected in a sterile container. It is recommended not to perform hygiene measures before collecting the sample. The minimum required volume for analysis is 10-15 ml. The sample should be delivered to the laboratory within one hour.
