A blood ferritin test is used to determine the type of anemia in individuals suspected of having low hemoglobin and hematocrit levels. It is also used in people with excess iron in the body (hemosiderosis) and to monitor the treatment of these disorders. Visit IntroLab in Belgrade, where our precise blood analysis will help you understand your body’s condition.

Ferritin – Definition

Ferritin is a protein found in cells that stores iron. The concentration of ferritin in the serum reflects the total level of iron in the body. Measuring serum ferritin levels is used to assess iron status, diagnose iron deficiency, differentiate iron deficiency anemia from anemia caused by chronic diseases, and monitor the effectiveness of therapy.

When is the ferritin blood test indicated?

Indications for a ferritin analysis include:

  • Iron status assessment: Ferritin is used to assess the total level of iron in the body and to detect deficiencies or excesses of iron.
  • Iron deficiency diagnosis: A low ferritin concentration can indicate iron deficiency, which may lead to anemia.
  • Differential anemia diagnosis: Ferritin analysis helps differentiate anemia caused by iron deficiency from anemia associated with chronic diseases.
  • Therapy monitoring: Measuring ferritin allows for monitoring the effectiveness of iron therapy and determining the body’s response to treatment.

Interpreting blood ferritin biochemical analysis

Results are interpreted based on the reference values of the blood ferritin biochemical analysis, which can be influenced by several factors. Some general guidelines for interpretation are:

  • Low ferritin values may indicate iron deficiency or anemia caused by iron deficiency.
  • High ferritin values may indicate the presence of excess iron in the body, which may be associated with hemochromatosis or other iron conditions.
  • In the case of inflammatory diseases, ferritin values may be elevated due to the response to inflammation.

Ferritin results should be interpreted considering the patient’s clinical picture, other laboratory parameters, and medical history. For a more accurate interpretation of the results, consultation with a doctor is recommended. On the other hand, if you are wondering about the cost of a ferritin analysis, IntroLab can assist you. Sample: Venous blood

Reverse time: 4h

Preparation: It is recommended to take a blood sample in the morning, after at least 8 hours of fasting. This is important because consuming food before sampling can affect the concentration of other substances in the blood, which can interfere with the accurate measurement of ferritin. Also, it is not recommended to determine ferritin levels immediately after iron therapy through oral, intravenous, or intramuscular administration, as this can affect the results.
