Echo virus, short for “Enteric cytopathic human orphan,” refers to a group of viruses that can cause serious infections in various parts of the body, including skin rashes. This virus is known for causing conditions like meningitis and meningoencephalitis and affecting the gastrointestinal tract. It enters the body through the gastrointestinal system, where it begins to replicate and eventually attacks the nervous system. While these viruses primarily affect those under 16, adults can also be infected. Echo virus has been linked to the development of type 1 diabetes, as well as liver and heart infections. The presence of the virus can be detected through the Echo Virus IgM At test, which is available at IntroLab, one of the most reliable laboratories in Belgrade.

How does infection occur?

The echo virus is primarily transmitted through the fecal-oral route, which means infection can happen if someone consumes food or water contaminated with the feces of an infected individual. The virus can also spread through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Symptoms of infection

Symptoms of an echo virus infection may include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Severe coughing
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Skin rashes
  • Sore throat
  • Chest pain and discomfort
  • Intense headaches
  • Changes in mental status
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • If the infection affects the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, the individual may develop sensitivity to light.

Why is Echo virus IgM At testing done?

Echo virus IgM testing is performed to detect various infections within the body. It is particularly useful in identifying myocarditis, which can cause complications in adults. A positive result, along with elevated IgG titers, suggests an acute or recent infection.

Who is most vulnerable to Echo virus?

Although anyone can contract the virus, children under 16 are especially susceptible to Echo virus. Additionally, individuals with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly or those with chronic conditions, are at higher risk for more severe infections.

Prevention and protection

To minimize the risk of Echo virus infection, make sure to wash your hands regularly, particularly before meals and after using the bathroom. It’s also important to avoid close contact with anyone displaying symptoms of infection.

Test preparation

No specific preparation is needed for this test. However, it’s advisable to inform your doctor about any existing medical conditions and medications you are currently taking.

Sample collection procedure

The test involves a straightforward blood draw that typically takes about 10-15 minutes. Once the blood is collected, it is sent to the laboratory for further analysis.

Treatment process

Most Echo virus infections resolve on their own and don’t require specific treatment. However, in severe cases, hospitalization and symptomatic care may be necessary. It’s important to consult a doctor if you suspect an infection.

Related tests

Along with the Echo Virus IgM At test, IntroLab also offers the Echo Virus IgG At test.
