The Echinococcus Total At IHA test is a specialized parasitological serology analysis used to detect antibodies against the Echinococcus parasite, also known as the dog tapeworm, in a patient’s blood. This test employs the immunohemagglutination (IHA) method and is available at IntroLab, a blood analysis laboratory in Belgrade.
Why is the Echinococcus total At IHA test done?
The purpose of this test is to identify whether an infection with the Echinococcus parasite is present or absent, which can lead to a condition known as echinococcosis.
When should you test for IgG antibodies against the dog tapeworm?
This test is indicated in the following situations:
- Suspected echinococcosis based on the patient’s clinical symptoms
- Detection of cysts in organs during an ultrasound exam
- Increased risk due to living or working in endemic regions
- Contact with dogs or domestic animals that may be carriers of the parasite
What are the symptoms of the disease for which the IHA test for Echinococcus antibodies is performed?
Symptoms of echinococcosis can vary depending on the affected organ. The most common symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and difficulty breathing.
What to expect after the test
Once your blood sample is taken at the laboratory in Belgrade, it is sent for analysis, with results usually available within a day. If the results are positive, your doctor will advise you on the next steps for further diagnosis and treatment.
Interpreting the results
The results are interpreted based on whether antibodies are present in your blood. A positive result suggests a possible infection, while a negative result indicates the absence of infection. However, it’s important to remember that a negative result does not entirely rule out the possibility of an infection.
Disease prevention
Preventing echinococcosis includes:
- Avoiding contact with infected animals
- Washing your hands after handling animals
- Cooking meat thoroughly at the proper temperature
Subtypes of the Echinococcus total At IHA test
While Echinococcus Total At IHA is a fundamental test, other subtypes are also available for diagnosing echinococcosis. At our Belgrade lab, patients have access to Echinococcus IgG At ELISA and Echinococcus IgG At IIF tests.
