Ear Swab (Bact/Mic) is used to detect ear canal infections. Ensure your health and identify potential issues in a timely manner by scheduling your analysis at IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade.

What is an Ear Swab (Bact/Mic)?

An ear swab (Bact/Mic) is a specific microbiological analysis that provides a deeper understanding of the microflora within the ear canal. This test identifies and differentiates various types of microorganisms that may cause infections or other issues within the ear. The presence of bacteria or fungi can lead to symptoms such as:

  • redness
  • swelling
  • pain
  • hearing loss

With precise pathogen detection, an ear swab enables doctors to accurately diagnose conditions like otitis media (middle ear infection) or otitis externa (outer ear infection). In addition, the analysis can detect potential resistant strains, which is essential for choosing the most effective treatment. This analysis helps patients achieve faster solutions to their problems and reduces the risk of complications or reinfection. In modern medicine, the ear swab is becoming an increasingly common tool in the fight against persistent and difficult-to-treat ear canal infections.

Collecting an Ear Swab

In laboratory conditions, a sterile cotton swab is used to collect the ear swab. A lab technician carefully inserts the swab into the ear canal to obtain a sample of the secretion or tissue. The procedure is efficient and usually does not cause pain, though it may be slightly uncomfortable for the patient.

Preparation for Ear Swab (Bact/Mic)

Before taking the sample, the patient should avoid using ear drops or other medications for at least 24 hours. The ear should be clean and free of wax to obtain the most accurate sample. If the patient is on antibiotic therapy, it is important to inform the doctor before taking the sample.

Analysis Results

The culture results reveal which pathogens are present in the sample. If bacteria or fungi are detected, additional tests can be conducted to determine their sensitivity to different antibiotics or antifungal agents. Based on these results, the doctor will prescribe the appropriate treatment for the infection.
