Dermatophyte infections are common and can be uncomfortable. Proper diagnosis is essential for effective treatment. IntroLab laboratory in Belgrade offers advanced testing services for dermatophytes, combining expertise and modern methods to provide fast and accurate results. With the help of dermatophyte culture and preparation analysis, doctors and patients can quickly determine the best approach to treatment.

When is the dermatophyte culture and preparation test performed?

The dermatophyte culture and preparation tests are conducted when there is suspicion of a fungal infection of the skin, nails, or scalp. The culture and preparation of dermatophytes allow for the identification of the specific fungus responsible for the infection. Recognizing the exact pathogen is crucial, as some dermatophytes may be resistant to certain therapies. Knowing the precise type of fungus helps doctors determine the most effective treatment method.

What are dermatophytes?

Dermatophytes are a group of fungi that can cause skin, hair, and nail infections in humans and animals. These fungi feed on keratin, a protein found in the upper layers of the skin, hair, and nails.

Infections caused by dermatophytes are known as tinea or dermatophytoses. Depending on the location, these infections can have various names:

  • Tinea pedis: foot infection, commonly known as athlete’s foot.
  • Tinea corporis: skin infection of the body.
  • Tinea cruris: groin infection, often referred to as jock itch.
  • Tinea capitis: infection of the scalp and hair.
  • Tinea unguium (or onychomycosis): nail infection.

The most common causes of these infections are fungi from the genera Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton.

How is the infection transmitted?

Dermatophyte infections can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected person, animal, or contaminated objects (such as shoes, socks, or towels). Preventive measures include keeping the skin clean and dry, avoiding the sharing of personal items such as combs or towels, and wearing footwear in public spaces like gyms or pools.

How is it treated?

Treatment for infections caused by dermatophytes depends on the location of the infection. Superficial skin infections are usually treated with topical antifungal creams such as clotrimazole or terbinafine. More severe infections, particularly of the nails or scalp, often require oral antifungal medications such as terbinafine or itraconazole. It is always important to consult a doctor to determine the most effective therapy and to follow treatment instructions to achieve the best outcome.
