The 24-hour urine creatinine test assesses kidney function. Creatinine, a breakdown product of creatine, is continuously produced in the muscles and excreted by the kidneys. You can obtain the results of this test at IntroLab, the leading biochemical laboratory in Belgrade.
What is Creatinine?
Creatinine is a small molecule continuously produced in the muscles as a byproduct of creatine, which acts as an energy reserve in muscles. The kidneys excrete creatinine from the body, and its concentration in blood and urine can indicate kidney function.
Why is Measuring Creatinine Important?
Measuring creatinine is crucial for assessing kidney function, diagnosing kidney diseases, and monitoring the effectiveness of treatments for kidney conditions. Elevated creatinine levels in blood and urine can suggest impaired kidney function.
Who Should Have Their Creatinine Levels Measured?
Measuring creatinine levels is recommended in the following situations:
- During routine medical check-ups
- For individuals with signs and symptoms of kidney disease
- For conditions that could be aggravated by kidney dysfunction
- For patients with kidney disease to monitor treatment and disease progression
How are the Results Interpreted?
Results are interpreted in the context of the patient’s overall clinical picture. Elevated creatinine levels may indicate reduced kidney function, while lower levels may be found in individuals with low muscle mass. Lower levels are also common in older adults or individuals who have undergone amputation.
How is the Creatinine in 24-Hour Urine Test Performed?
This test involves collecting urine over a 24-hour period. Begin by discarding the first morning urine, then collect all subsequent urine throughout the day and night, including the first morning urine of the next day. The urine should be collected in containers specifically designed for 24-hour collection.
Sample Required
The 24-hour urine creatinine test requires a urine sample collected over a 24-hour period.
Cost of the Creatinine in 24-Hour Urine Test

Vrsta uzorka i vreme kada se uzima uzorak
Sample: 24 urine
Reverse time: 4h
Preparation: Determine if you need one or more 2-liter bottles. Discard the first morning urine (do not collect it). Collect all urine throughout the day and night in the bottle. Include the first morning urine of the following day. Deliver the entire collected sample to the laboratory for analysis. For some tests, a preservative needs to be added to the bottle first – ask the laboratory for specific instructions.
