The Coxsackie virus IgM At test is a specialized blood test used to detect the presence of IgM antibodies against the Coxsackie virus. This test is essential for identifying a recent or active infection with this virus and is available as part of the wide range of services provided by IntroLab, a private laboratory in Belgrade.

About the Coxsackie virus

The Coxsackie virus is part of the enterovirus family and is divided into two main groups:

  • Coxsackie Group A
  • Coxsackie Group B

Coxsackie A virus is usually associated with conditions like herpangina, hand, foot, and mouth disease, and neonatal infections. On the other hand, Coxsackie B virus is known for causing pleurodynia, pericarditis, and myocarditis.

When do IgM antibodies develop?

IgM (Immunoglobulin M) antibodies are the first type of antibodies produced by the immune system in response to an infection. Their presence in the blood typically indicates a current or recent infection. After exposure to a pathogen, the immune system begins producing IgM antibodies within a few days, and they can usually be detected in the blood within 5-10 days. These antibodies remain elevated for several weeks following the infection before gradually declining. During this time, the immune system starts producing IgG antibodies, which can stay in the blood for years and provide long-term protection against reinfection by the same pathogen.

Coxsackie virus IgM At testing process

This test involves drawing a blood sample from a vein in the patient’s arm. After the blood is collected, the sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis. A positive result indicates the presence of IgM antibodies against the Coxsackie virus, suggesting a recent or active infection. On the other hand, a negative result indicates the absence of Coxsackie virus IgM antibodies, meaning no infection is present.
