What is Coagulation Factor V?

Factor V is one of many proteins in the blood essential for the normal coagulation process, which prevents bleeding. This factor acts as a cofactor, assisting in the conversion of prothrombin (Factor II) into thrombin. Thrombin then converts fibrinogen into fibrin, the primary material that forms blood clots.

Why is Factor V important?

Factor V is crucial because if it is defective or missing, it can lead to bleeding problems or an increased tendency to form blood clots. There are two primary abnormalities associated with Factor V: Factor V Leiden and Factor V deficiency. Factor V Leiden is a genetic mutation that increases the risk of forming abnormal blood clots, while Factor V deficiency can cause a bleeding disorder.

When is the test performed?
